This piece is supposed to represent African American women in the 1850s and 1860s. The flowers are supposed to represent the uniqueness and creativity of the individual. The cotton that she is holding represents the stark black and white nature of the societal norms of the time. This piece shows that an individual can thrive intellectually even if the societal norms are oppressive.
